My First Blog

Hi All,

Come along (and bear) with me as I explore blogging for the first time as well as my first trip to the Motherland, Africa. Personal thanks to my friend Vanessa (a true 'Techno-Babe' in the most respectful sense) for directing me to the how-tos.

Preparations for my first trip to Africa, of course included wading through a list of required and recommended innoculations as well as determining where to get these shots and malaria pills. Yellow fever at the Health Dept for the most competitive rate. Then at the UM clinic, I was handed a 21 page Travelers Health Report. Never having a fear of needles or shots, I took the other (4) recommended vaccines without a problem and had the prescription for malaria tablets filled. The UM doctor, a travel physician ( didn't know this specialty existed), patiently answered my many questions and chatted about his upcoming trip to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup. Three hours in the clinic seemed to fly by.

The next day, of course, I walked around like Frankenstein, arms held out from my sides too stiff and sore to imagine!

I heard that paper work and red tape is more challenging than the wilderness of Africa. (smile)

Well, Anthony, I'll just say that it's been quite an 'interesting' process. One of my travel partners was caught in a situation when there was a sudden increase in visa fees. His entire application packet was sent back to him in his self-addressed express mail envelope ($14) along with a request for the new amount! But, that process is now behind us. Hopefully we'll zip through the red tape in future trips.

For a first time blogger, you have me interested in how your adventures will flow across these pages. I look forward to learning about the people from the Motherland.

Have a great time on this fantastic voyage.

Anita, you were who you are 40 some yrs ago, always ripe for adventure;leading the way, never giving into the comments of your peers. That is a good thing. How well I remember you being among the ones to break the " color barrier" at UF. Many of our children and their children are comfortable there today because of bold student like you during the 60ties.

With this in mind , my hat goes off to you with this adventure, inspite of what I said ..lol...lol enjoy yourself and know that I will follow your blog with envy . Maybe from your experience, I will get the courage to visit the Mother Land as well. But you know, inspite of my "big mouth" I'm scary at heart.
May God's mercy and travel grace be with you at all times
Love you
Cecilia
